After reading it,the first feeling happened to my heart is that it just likes a fairy.Though it may constructed basing on current century,it appears a certain happiness which seldom seemed in that world like. Alexandre Dumas Pere's works show us his wonderful narratives and his hopes (maybe) to his world. So heros with great power always be seen in his works. So maybe I can't believe he is a very very good writer whoes works didn't give much importance of reality though I like him and his works very much.

This novel's four actors must leave a deep impression on us I think.Athos'reason,Melady's viciousion…all these consists of a beautiful world(with justice and evil) can love ,can hate ,can angery, can happy…with loyalty and nature. So clearly a world!

The Three Musketeers is a marvelous journey and should be appreciated foremost for its engaging story. The techniques Dumas employed to such success in 1840-- particularly his mastery of the form of the Romance--still work today.

As we saw in the closing portions of the book, Dumas gives us a fully developed Romance within his historical framework. He starts with levity and confidence, and ends with moroseness and doubt. The ending, indeed, seems to question many of the books dearly held values. D'Artagnan达达尼昂bees a lieutenant in the Musketeers, but his promotion es from the Cardinal--the Cardinal whom he and his four friends had fought so valiantly against for the first half of the novel. In the epilogue, d'Artagnan befriends the Comte de Rochefort, a Cardinalist agent. Was all that earlier fighting really worth it, then? Or was there something futile in all the Musketeers' efforts? Both the possibility of futility and this return to the normal at the end of a great Quest, characterize the form of the Romance as much as do its lighter aspects. Dumas sees the form through.

With Dumas's historical context in mind, the melancholy of the Romance bees even more pronounced. It is almost as though Dumas presents this wonderful Romantic adventure, providing people with a chance to escape day to day toil and immerse themselves in better thoughts about their country, and then spurns it. He cannot bring himself to see the lie of Romanticism through to the end. Even bearing in mind that this turn to ambiguity is typical for the end of the Romance, it is hard not to interpret the ending of the novel as Dumas's rejection of Romantic values.

There are two sequels to The Three Musketeers, which Dumas wrote to capitalize on the success of the novel. They are entitled Vingt ans apres, published in 10 volumes in 1845, and Dix ans plus tard, ou le vite de Bragelonne, published in 26 parts from 1848-1850. The latter opens in 1660, and tells of a matured, powerful d'Artagnan, captain of the Musketeers. It also contains the account ofPorthos's heroic death. But despite these sequels, Dumas never fully recaptured his success of 1844. His estate and his health declined until, after a period of furious attempted productivity to recoup his debts, he died in 1870. The Romance left his life as well.

But The Three Musketeers is not merely a Romance; it is also a great historical novel, and Dumas's interesting approach to history also contributes to the success of his book. While he keeps his characters away from being major players in national events, he is not afraid of brazenly attributing human motives to history. In Dumas's version, France and England very nearly fight a war simply because the Duke of Buckingham loves Anne of Austria: John Fenton assassinates Buckingham because of personal reasons provided by Milady, and so on. Part of the entertainment of The Three Musketeers is that, in seeming to avoid the great events and focus on petty affairs, Dumas explains the great events more satisfyingly and entertainingly than any direct explanation of affairs of state could hope to do. History does not have a face-- d'Artagnan has a face, and a handsome one at that.

Dumas's formula serves his story well. His incorporation of Romanticism into the historical novel lifted an entire genre of literature into public adulation, and gave the French people a story that reassured them about their country even as it brought them away from their country's troubles. Popular literature must be considered on two fronts: aesthetically and socially, as literature and as a popular artifact. The best popular literature, like the work of Alexandre Dumas, supercedes the latter category to e into our minds as a work of literature in its own right. It is not necessary to know about Dumas's life, or about French history, or about the genre of Romance, to enjoy The Three Musketeers. The superlative entertainment of the novel speaks for itself--which is why it remains so important and so interesting to study it.

XXX

After reading three different vision of Cinderella, paring with the vision of Perrault and Grimm, I prefer Duan chengshi ‘s works. In the story, they both have very similar characteristics. For example, Cinderella is always a very beautiful and nice girl. She has to do all the hard and dirty work under the discipline of bad characters. Bad characters are monly involved in these stories. For example, Yeh-Shen had a

wicked stepmother, who promoted her own child, but was very mean to her.

The reason why I prefer Chinese vision are as follows. First ,as a Chinese, the social environment is familiar to me, It happens in ancient China. And in western Cinderella, though they also live in the ancient times, but their nature of society didn’t change so much. Second, the plot happens on Yeh-shen is simple but moving, Yeh met a talking fish and treat it well, she got help until the fish was eaten by her stepmother and stepsister But in Perrault’s vision, and she only wore the wonderful

clothes at a time because she was somewhat recognized by her stepsister. But in western Cinderella, the plot is a little plex for children to read to some extent, and the change on Cinderella was that she wanted to join the grand meeting and before that she was obstructed by her stepmother for two times. And also she get dressed charmingly for three times until

she was found by the king. Finally, the shoes Yeh wears is made of gold, but in Perrault,It is made of glass while in Grimm is a pair of crystal shoes. I think golden shoe is more acceptable for me but If the glass or crystal, I guess It bines fairy tales.

In a word, I have eyes only for Yeh shen ,the Chinese Cinderella. It is easy to read and understand especially for kids.

Besides Animal Farm, 1984 is the second novel of George Orwell’s I have read. Comparing with Animal Farm, 1984 is more political and more penetrating.

In the novel, there’s a sentence:” If there was hope, it lays in proles”. However, how about the proles? They are wild, and they are a wild power. Maybe the party can’t control them, but it can regard them as animals and say:”Proles and animals are free!”

When Iread the book, what impresses me most is the superiority of the party. It is invincible. “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”Nevertheless, it is the party who controls the present, that is to say, it controls everything anytime. It always makes up lies and changes the history to maintain its own status. What’s more, it doesn’t give its members freedom. Even their marriages must have a recognized purpose which is to beget children for the service of the party.Besides, the party also wants to narrow the range of thoughts by using a new language called Newspeak. To be a member of such a party, he must be very sensitive. Every day even every minute, he is in the danger of being accused of conspiracies. For example, Wiston-who believes nobody-alwaysthinks that people who are close to him must be a spy or an agent. Thus, he misunderstands Julia who is crazy about him. How silly he is!

I am moved when Julia and Wiston say they won’t betray each other. It’s hard for people to have a real love under that circumstance because the party will use all means to let them surrender!

The last but not the least point I want to say is about truth. As we all know, two plus two makes four. It’s a truth. But if the party says it’s five rather than four, then they have to follow it. Or else, they will bear the

unbearable pain until they change the truth into a lie.

So when reading this book, I’m full of passion in my heart. Meanwhile I feel lucky that I have such a promising future!

A Book of All Times

——Thoughts given by Sherlock Holmes and the Duke‟s Son

Written in the first chapter of the book Pride and Prejudice is an extraordinary sentence of which even a person who has had only a brief look upon the book will not fail to receive a deep impression-It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. In terms of Sherlock Holmes, we‟d better alter the sentence into “It is a fact

universally accepted by readers throughout the world that an excellent book in possession of our famous detective Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly a

masterpiece of all times.” Perhaps this is one of the most obvious explanations for the unrivaled popularity of “Holmes series” in the field of detective stories. Overwhelmed by the remendations provided by my friends, I decided to take a look on this Sherlock Holmes and the Duke‟s Son originally published by Oxford University Press.

As a whole, this book is about a case concerning the Duke‟s missing son. Arthur, the Duke‟s son, was found out in a certain morning to have

disappeared, acpanied with which was also the disappearance of the German teacher. The school master Dr. Huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time Sherlock Holmes for help. Realizing how tough and important the case is, Holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed Dr. Huxtable back to Mackleton by train. Having formed a rough idea about the whole matter, Holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the German teacher Heidegger. Finally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective, he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the Duke.

Having once started reading this fiction, I was pletely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book. As the saying goes, “Well begun, half done”. At the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client. However, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client‟s strange

behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it. As is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure‟s

characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic

and attractive. Therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the original “Holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr. Watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the truth hidden behind the

enigmatic happenings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a friend that he always acpanies Holmes wherever he goes. In this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, Apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one. After all, except the author himself, who knows that the Duke‟s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the Duke‟s bastard? In addition, who knows that the Duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before Holmes solves this plicated problem? Yet,

surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well. While enjoying this wonderful story, I could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author‟s

gorgeous writing skill. Closing my eyes, I can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film. Not until then did I understand why the Japanese cartoon film Detective Conan used this “Conan” as the name of its hero.

As far as I am concerned, nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero Sherlock Homes than his profound knowledge which has certainly

assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. Take the bicycle tyres for instance, Holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres. What‟s more, according to his other stories, Holmes has studied different kinds of newspapers, cigarettes, people‟s footprints and other special things as well. Therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. Except for his illimitable knowledge, Holmes also

specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a GREat discovery or even the truth itself. From his speaking “Every

mystery has an answer”, we can readily shape the impression of a man with great intelligence and inflexible will. In this case, after getting rid of unrelated facts, Sherlock Homes eventually grasped the clue and discovered the amazing fact.

Needless to say, as a world-renowned masterpiece, Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son has attracted and is still charming numerous readers from all corners of the world and people from all walks of life. The “Holmes series” has already set up a standard against which all the following detective fictions are measured. Sherlock Holmes, beyond all doubt, has bee a name firmly rooted in people’s memories. Although Dr. Watson’s closing The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes in 1927 was a GREat pity to the readers, the discontinuance of the entire “Holmes series” may have

actually added to the legendary stature of Sherloc

k Holmes.

In the novel, there’s a sentence:” If there was hope, it lays in proles”. However, how about the proles? They are wild, and they are a wild power. Maybe the party can’t control them, but it can regard them as animals and say:”Proles and animals are free!”

When I read the book, what impresses me most is the superiority of the party. It is invincible. “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.” Nevertheless, it is the party who controls the present, that is to say, it controls everything anytime. It always makes up lies and changes the history to maintain its own status. What’s more, it doesn’t give its members freedom. Even their marriages must have a recognized purpose which is to beget children for the service of the party. Besides, the party also wants to narrow the range of thoughts by using a new language called Newspeak.

To be a member of such a party, he must be very sensitive. Every day even every minute, he is in the danger of being accused of conspiracies. For example, Wiston-who believes nobody-always thinks that people who are close to him must be a spy or an agent.
