圣诞节英语短文

Christmas

the feast of christmas

it is not easy to pin-point the origins of the christmas feast, today the more important feast of the christmas season in most western christian churches. one can only say for certain that the birth of jesus christ was being celebrated in rome by the year 336 a.d.; afterwards the feast was celebrated in other christian churches throughout the world.

why it was celebrated on december 25th is another question. no date for the birth of jesus can be found in the new testament, which is concerned more with the question "who is jesus?" than the date of his birth. early christian speculation about his birth date was influenced by the symbolism of the changing seasons, then popular in religious thought, which paid careful attention to the equinoxes and solstices of the sun. christian scholars speculated that jesus was conceived at the spring equinox (march 25th) and therefore was born on december 25th, the date of the winter solstice.

in many of the christian churches, march 25th is still the feast of the annunciation, when the angel gabriel announced to mary that she was to be the mother of jesus.

possible impluse for the feast of christmas may have came too from the establishment of the pagan feast of the "unconquered sun-god" by the emperor aurelian in 274 a.d. to be celebrated on december 25, the day of the winter solstice in rome and throughout the empire. in response, christians could celebrate the feast of the "sun of righteousness" (malachi 4,2), jesus christ, who called himself " the light of the world."

father christmas

it is said that in the year of 300 ad, there was a kind old man and his name was saint nicholas. he was always ready to help the poor and often gave presents to them.

today, father christmas is an imaginary figure, but nearly all young children believe in him. they think he is a happy old man with a long white beard and a long red robe.

on the night of the tty-fourth of december every year, father christmas from some cold northern land es down the chimney of the fireplace to put presents by the beds of children or to fill their stockings. so when children go to bed that night, they hang up their stockings, and on christmas morning they wake to find them full of presents. of course, it's really their parents who fill the stockings.

another name for father christmas is santa claus.

for today's christian, the origin of christmas is, and should be, the birth of jesus christ as recorded in the bible. nothing more and nothing less. however, most of what we witness on december 25th each year has absolutely nothing to do with that blessed day, which probably occurred in late summer or early fall about 2,000 years ago. in fact, most of the customs and traditions of christmas actually pre-date the birth of jesus, and many of them are downright deceptive in their meaning and origin. anyway, who cares when christ was born?

每年的12月25日是西方最重要的节日圣诞节,那么圣诞节的来历是什么?美国人是如何过圣诞节的?下文小编就为大家分享一篇英语短文:圣诞节在美国的发展史,祝大家圣诞节快乐!

In the first half of the 19th century, Christmas was a verydifferent kind of holiday than it is today. People did not have aset way of celebrating. Christmas was not even an official holidayyet.

So, munities around the country honored the day indifferent ways. Some observed Christmas as an importantChristian religious day, honoring the birth of Jesus. Others

celebrated the day with parties, music, drinking and eating. And,some munities did not celebrate the day at all.

But, it was during the early 1800s that Americans began toreinvent the holiday. They started bining ancient Christmastraditions with modern American influences. Shirley Griffith andSteve Ember tell the story.

In 1819, the popular American writer Washington Irvingwrote a series of five essays published in a book called "TheSketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent."

The essays describe a wealthy British landowner who inviteshis farm workers into his home to celebrate Christmas. Thelandowner recreates a traditional Christmas as it would havebeen celebrated in the distant past.

Irving praised this looking back to ancient traditions. Heliked the idea of different levels of society ing together toenjoy a festive and peaceful holiday. Washington Irving seemedto express concern about the lack of such unifying Christmas

traditions in modern America.

Dutch immigrants in New York in the 19th century

celebrated the feast of Saint Nicholas. Here, he arrives bysteamboat in the Netherlands, Nov. 16, 2013.

Penne Restad wrote a book "Christmas in America: A

History." It shows how Americans began to slowly shape

Christmas into a unifying national holiday during the first half ofthe 19th century. She describes how Christmas had differentmeanings for Americans who came from different cultural andreligious backgrounds. Many immigrants brought Christmastraditions from their own countries.

Religion played a big role in how an American might

celebrate the holiday. Calvinist Christians banned the celebrationof Christmas. But groups such as Episcopalians and Moravianshonored the day with religious services and seasonal

decorations.

By mid-century, Christian groups began to ignore their

religious differences over the meaning of Christmas and honoredthe day in special ways.

Christmas became an important time for families to

celebrate at home. More and more Christian Americans alsobegan to follow the European traditions of Christmas trees andgiving gifts. Christians believed that the tree represented Jesusand was also a sign of new beginnings. German immigrantsbrought their tradition of putting lights, sweets and toys on thebranches of evergreen trees placed in their homes.

This tradition of setting up a Christmas tree soon spread tomany American homes. So did the practice of giving people

presents. As these traditions increased in popularity, the moderntrade and business linked to Christmas also grew.

As Christmas became more popular, some states declaredthe day a state holiday. Louisiana was the first state to make the

move in 1837. By 1860, 14 other states had followed. It was notuntil 1870 that President Ulysses Grant made Christmas a federalholiday.

Americans already knew old Christmas songs that came fromEngland and other areas of Europe. But many new AmericanChristmas songs started to bee popular. For example, in1849, a religious leader from Massachusetts wrote the words to"It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." The song "Jingle Bells"

appeared seven years later. And, a year later, a religious leader inWilliamsport, Pennsylvania wrote the song "We Three Kings ofOrient Are."

And of course, no discussion of Christmas would be

plete without talking about of one of the holiday's mostfamous representations: Santa Claus.

This character is based on the story of Saint Nicholas, a

Christian holy person believed to have lived in the third century.Saint Nicholas became known as a protector of children. In hisrole as a Christmas hero, different cultures have given himdifferent names. These include Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle and

Father Christmas. But for most Americans his most popular namewould bee Santa Claus.

In the 19th century, many Dutch immigrants living in the

United States celebrated the feast of Saint Nicholas on December

6. Saint Nicholas was especially important to New Yorkersbecause of their history as a Dutch colony.

In 1809, Washington Irving published his "History of NewYork." It lists Saint Nicholas as the patron saint of New Yorkers. He describes the saint wearing a low hat, large pants, andsmoking a pipe. Does this description sound familiar?
